Youth Education Course Details and Covid Course Financial Assistance Application


Youth Education at the University of Utah is now enrolling students in online winter break camps. The cost of these courses is covered through COVID course financial assistance for qualifying students.

Who Qualifies for these Programs?

Students must fall within the age range listed for each camp and be residents of Utah.


Additional Information:

  • Completing the application does not automatically enroll you in the course. You will be contacted regarding your application status.
  • Please read the course notes before applying as they contain important details about supplies and additional requirements.
  • If you are applying for more than one child, you must fill out a separate application for each child.

 


 

Arctic Animation (Age 7-9) - Online

It’s going to be snow much fun! Bring your ideas to life in this introductory animation camp. Write, produce, and direct a short stop-motion film using your own images, text, shapes, and set design. Learn how to record audio sound effects and import music to make your creations unique! The end product will be a short film that your friends and family will be s-mitten with! Co-Sponsored with Learning Through Robotics.

Notes:  This camp uses the same curriculum as Junior Animation (Age 7-9); we do not recommend registering if your child has already participated in the other course. No previous experience necessary. This camp requires an external webcam and a laptop/computer for you to download the necessary software. (All Windows work. Mac that have MacOS 10.13 or older will work; newer versions of Mac cannot be supported). There is no additional supply pick-up. Loaner webcams or laptops may be available, please contact us for details. No camp Friday, January 1.

Winter Minecraft Madness (Age 9-12) – Online

Grab your redstones and pickaxes, we are going deeper into Minecraft than ever before! Learn how real-life engineering principles can be used in the digital world. Utilizing the all precious redstone, you will use hoppers, repeaters, observers, and more to make complex machines that would make Steve and Alex proud. Lastly, we will take a trip to the North Pole to trap polar bears and fight off hostile mobs with snow golems. Co-sponsored with Learning Through Robotics.

Notes:  This camp requires a laptop/computer which has the Minecraft downloaded. If your computer does not have the software already, you must purchase it before the start of camp (cost is around $25). There is no additional supply pick-up. Please contact us for details. No camp Friday, January 1

Winter Wonder Bots: Introduction (Age 6-8) - Online

The weather outside is frightful, but our robotics camps are so delightful! With a wintery-flurry twist, explore basic robotics and programming using LEGOs WeDo Construction kits. You will also learn basic STEM concepts then use that new knowledge and your creativity to build with motors, gears, pulleys, and sensors. You will also use pictorial-based programming to add another element to your ingenuity. From building moving robots like birds and animals to boats that can explore icebergs and aiding in rescue operations, it’s snow secret this camp will bring your LEGO bricks to life. Co-sponsored with Learning Through Robotics.

Additionally, this camp requires a laptop/computer and for you to download the necessary software (Windows, or Mac that have macOS 10.13 or older will work; newer versions of Mac cannot be supported). All other supplies are available via curbside pick-up Monday, December 28 from 6:30am to 7:30am and drop-off on Thursday, December 31 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at the University of Utah. Frosty Fun w/ Scratch 1 (Age 8-10) - Online

Skip the winter boots and mittens as you gear up for this camp! Build an animated snowman or program a snowball fight from the comfort of your living room where you will learn the basics of Scratch. Then take a deep dive into robotics technology as you learn to work with motions, costumes, controls, operators, and variables; all while programming winter-themed activities like skiing and opening presents. There are snow many possibilities! Co-Sponsored with Learning Through Robotics.

Dreaming of a White Canvas: Painting at The Paint Mixer (Age 9-14) - OnlinE

There is snow place like your imagination! Join The Paint Mixer in this winter themed class that will warm your art. Utilizing acrylic and canvas, discover different expressive techniques and create a personal connection with your art. Gain a deeper understanding of the medium as you complete masterpieces that will impress your family and friends. This class will focus on technique and developing your artistic style. Co-sponsored with The Paint Mixer.

Note:  Supplies are available for pick-up at The Paint Mixer (1327 E 2100 S #102, Salt Lake City, UT 84105) during the studio’s scheduled class times.
